There is something incredibly magical about an intimate wedding. When you strip away the massive guest lists and focus purely on the people who have championed your love story from day one, the energy in the room shifts. That is exactly how it felt capturing Gabrielle and Joseph Semler’s gorgeous, close knit wedding last month.
From a college dining hall in Alabama to a beautiful celebration in Jacksonville, these two are the absolute sweetest couple, and their wedding day was a true reflection of their love.
An Alabama Love Story: “Yeah, sure. Why not.”
To truly appreciate their wedding day, you have to know how Gabrielle and Joe started. They both entered the University of Alabama as part of the Randall Research Scholars Program, a tight knit cohort of just 40 freshmen. Looking to make friends, Gabrielle sent a message in their class GroupMe inviting people to breakfast.
Joe showed up.
Over breakfast, they bonded over shared hobbies like board games and birdwatching, which quickly led to them hosting regular game nights with friends. While Gabrielle dropped plenty of hints, it ultimately took her asking Joe out herself to kick off their official dating journey. Joe’s incredibly cool, composed response? “Yeah, sure. Why not.”
They’ve been happily together since their sophomore year, and Joe took the lead by proposing during their senior year.
A Smart Bride Secret: The Pre Wedding Bridal Session
One of my favorite elements of Gabrielle’s wedding experience was that she opted for a standalone bridal session a few months before the big day!
I cannot recommend this enough to future brides. Not only did it serve as the absolute perfect trial run for her hair and makeup, but it allowed us to get stunning, stress free portraits at River Oak Park without the ticking clock of a wedding day schedule. Gabrielle’s incredibly talented best friend made her bouquet, and it was breathtaking! Having that extra time with Gabrielle made me so eager for the wedding day itself.
The Big Day: Aspire Church & Breathtaking Portraits
The ceremony took place at Aspire Church in the historic San Marco neighborhood. Before the wedding, Gabrielle admitted she was a bit nervous about being the center of attention. But the second the music started, with the beautiful, resonant tones of the piano and organ, and she walked down the aisle to exchange vows with Joe, all that nervous energy melted into pure, radiant joy.
After capturing family photos at the church, we took the wedding party to Treaty Oak Park, where the massive, ancient trees provided a dramatic, stunning backdrop for portraits.
Afterward, the newlyweds and I slipped away back to River Oaks Park, the same spot where we shot Gabrielle’s bridals. The familiarity of the location allowed Gabrielle and Joe to just relax, breathe, and enjoy their first moments as husband and wife. The resulting photos? Absolutely amazing.
A Delicious Celebration at Maggiano’s
With the portraits wrapped up, it was time to celebrate! The reception was held at Maggiano’s Little Italy, where the atmosphere was warm, cozy, and filled with laughter.
Gabrielle and Joe shared a beautiful, flawless first dance that they had been so excited for, and the food was, naturally, incredible.
Photographer’s Note: I truly adored both of their families. Everyone was so welcoming, kind, and genuinely thrilled to celebrate Gabrielle and Joe. It was an honor to be the one translating their nervous excitement into polished, happy, lifelong memories.
Gabrielle and Joseph, thank you for letting me capture your beautiful love story. Cheers to a lifetime of birdwatching, board games, and happiness!
