Amelia was my oldest newborn to date in the studio at a whole 5 weeks old! Typically, photographers want to see newborns before they hit the 12-day mark. Before 12 days babies tend to stay nice and sleepy throughout their newborn pictures, which allows me to give parents those squishy baby poses they love so much. This is because babies still tend to curl up into very sweet poses similar to the positions they were in when they were in the womb. After two weeks most babies go through a growth spurt. This is when they learn to start stretching those arms and legs (as you can see little Amelia wanted to do). They’re no longer able to curl up for many of the poses. They also stop sleeping as soundly. It’s also around the 2-week mark that babies begin to grow out of their newborn features that many parents want to capture.
However, that doesn’t mean I can’t see older babies! I will still be able to use props and wraps and get detail shots of little fingers, toes, ears, and nose. Just know that there’s a possibility that I won’t be able to do some of the some of the more posed newborn pictures that some parents want.
When Amelia’s parents called to book her session she was already a month old. Although she completely renewed my faith in older babies because was great! She gave me some of the most hilarious facial expressions and her personality definitely shined through. In nearly every photo she is making a different expression. Sometimes she seemed to be saying “What in the heck are you doing lady?!” and in others, she was just highly amused. I think mom and dad are going to love the family photos, look at all that personality! I could not stop laughing as I edited this newborn session. Amelia is just a DOLL!!
It was so great to meet baby Amelia and her parents. Congratulations again, she is perfection!
